Contenders are planting their flags in this week’s Grade the Trade, making moves to win in 2025 and beyond. One team is pushing hard to land a red-hot rookie, another is sending every future 1st they can to tier up at wide receiver, while we’re contemplating if it’s time to trade Patrick Mahomes. We’ve also have a contender buying Derrick Henry to shore up a thin RB room, and a bold quarterback swing in a 1QB league. Different paths, same goal: tilt the balance of power in their favor before Week 1 even kicks off.
Grade Ratings:
A – Great Trade for Both Parties
B – Leans One Side, But Fair
C – Questionable, But Defensible
D – Lopsided Deal
F – Borderline Collusion Deal
Trade #1 | B- | Grade the Trade
Anthony Richardson, DJ Giddens, and Omarion Hampton for Christian McCaffrey, Michael Penix, Pat Bryant, and Tory Horton.

Vivid_Lab_1945 asks, “Too Much for Hampton?”
In a 12-team Superflex, Start 10, TE Premium league, Vivid_Lab_1945 has his sights set on the Chargers’ bruising first-round rookie. His roster is already strong with Jayden Daniels and Cam Ward under center, Jonathan Taylor and Breece Hall in the backfield, Jefferson and Nacua out wide, and Brock Bowers at TE.
The questions we’re answering: Is this enough capital to land Hampton? And if Team B is a contender, does completing this trade make sense?
TEAM A | Anthony Richardson, DJ Giddens, and Omarion Hampton
PROs
- Omarion Hampton’s pathway to an RB1 season keeps getting more probable.
- The dynasty value of this deal is in favor of Hampton’s side today.
CONs
- Michael Penix’s career is starting, Richardson’s could end this preseason.
- McCaffery has RB1 overall ceiling, and a bona fide week winner. (caveat: if he stays healthy).
TEAM B | Christian McCaffrey, Michael Penix, Pat Bryant, and Tory Horton.
PRO
- QB confidence upgrade. Michael Penix Jr. will get some time, where Anthony Richardson isn’t a lock to be the starter over Daniel Jones.
- Christian McCaffery is a great option for a contender in 2025.
- Pat Bryant and Tory Horton have been impressing in camp.
CON
- Omarion Hampton is a heavy price to pay when the return could evaporate in a year.
VERDICT: Team A wins the deal, but won’t feel it fully until next season.
It’s easy to get swept up in Omarion Hampton’s future. First-round draft capital, handpicked by Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh, and dropped into an offense that wants to run the leather off the ball. The hype has pushed him into being the second rookie off the board in many drafts, behind only Ashton Jeanty.
The missing piece of context here: What’s Team B’s goal?
If they’re a contender, moving Hampton for a slight QB upgrade, while also landing an equal or better 2025 piece, can feel like a strong win-now move. It clears a path for a title run without gutting the core.
But let’s play devil’s advocate. What if McCaffrey never bounces back? What if Penix is solid, but Richardson delivers the fantasy-breaking upside the community’s been hoping for? Suddenly, you’ve shipped off a young RB with talent and opportunity for value that just went up in smoke.
That’s the tightrope here: the risk is real, but so is the championship appeal.

Trade #2 | B | Grade the Trade
Brian Thomas Jr. & Mike Evans for Rome Odunze, 26 1st, 27, 1st, & 28 1st

“BTJ or the package?”, wonders OK-Body656.
Brian Thomas Jr. delivered one of the most productive rookie WR seasons in history, and even after the team added a “wide receiver” with the second overall pick, the dynasty community still sees a lofty ceiling for the young star. Despite Thomas Jr.’s later draft capital, he’s already surged past Rome Odunze in rankings. Both carry plenty of hype heading into this season. Without knowing each fantasy team’s situation, we’ll break this one down strictly through the lens of value.
TEAM A | Brian Thomas and Mike Evans
PROs
- Brian Thomas Jr. was already the WR4 overall in his rookie season.
- Mike Evans is eternal, and is poised for his 12th straight 1,000-yard receiving season. Savvy move adding him to the trade.
CONs
- It’s a hefty dose of value being traded away—which is what the hype costs.
TEAM B | Rome Odunze, 26 1st, 27, 1st, & 28 1st
PROs
- Rome Odunze gets head coach Ben Johnson, who is smitten with the WR.
- Three 1st’s is a nice haul of draft capital.
CONs
- The draft picks stretch deep into the future, and their positions are unknown.
Verdict: Team B wins this deal by diversifying their team value with draft picks, and a potentially equally productive WR moving forward.
I loved watching Brian Thomas Jr. last season, and I’m expecting big things from the Jacksonville offense as Liam Coen brings his innovative offensive mind to town. Travis Hunter will be electric, but I expect some rookie growing pains with Thomas Jr. once again leading the show early.
I see Rome Odunze with just as high a ceiling as his draftmate, and if he starts trending that way, this deal could be a home run that propels this team to another level. That’s the best-case scenario, of course—but even if Odunze doesn’t rocket to the moon, Thomas Jr. will likely see some regression as Hunter grows into his role as an NFL receiver.
From a strategy standpoint, tiering down to a player you believe will break out is one of the savviest moves a manager can make. Don’t rely on past production to stay sticky; in dynasty, the only constant is change.
Trade #3 | A- | Grade the Trade
Jayden Daniels and 26 2nd for Kyren Williams, George Pickens, Michael Penix Jr., and a 26 1st

The chat lit up with praise for this deal. The consensus? An absolute smash for Daniels, and in SuperFlex, I’d be right there with them. But this is exactly why context matters: this league is 1QB. The owner even posted his team to show off the new-look roster.

That’s a strong lineup, even without Kyren Williams and George Pickens in the picture, and the QB upgrade is massive. With Stroud and Stafford on the bench, Daniels steps in as an instant difference-maker for a roster built to chase a title.
But the cost was not as cheap as the community initially assumed.
TEAM A | Jayden Daniels and 26 2nd
PROs
- Arguably the QB1 in dynasty at the moment.
- In a 1QB league, Daniels is an even bigger gamechanger as a weekly advantage.
CONs
- Daniels’ 2024 was incredibly efficient. Will he produce similarly with more game film available?
TEAM B | Kyren Williams, George Pickens, Michael Penix, and 26 1st
PROs
- Kyren Williams just got his contract, instantly adding value to this dynasty roster.
- George Pickens is a perfect upside player for any team, contending or rebuilding.
- Strong return value in a 1QB league.
CONs.
- HUGE tier down at QB to a non-mobile, unproven QB.
VERDICT: Team B takes this with the overall value improvement, but the overpay makes sense from Team A.
Treating your roster purely like a stock portfolio, without ever cashing in value to strengthen your starting lineup, can leave a team stuck in the middle forever. The League of Extraordinary Jeantymen chose a different path, locking in a quarterback they believe can anchor the position for years.
This roster is deep and championship-ready, but you can only start so many players each week. At some point, depth becomes a luxury you can’t fully use, especially when you have the chance to upgrade to a young difference-maker. This move keeps Team A firmly in contender mode while flipping a weakness into a strength. In my view, it’s a strong trade that makes both teams better.

C.J Stroud and 1.05 for Patrick Mahomes, Tucker Kraft, & 2.04

DrDH21 is pondering if it’s time to “Move Mahommes”
Patrick Mahomes is coming off his lowest FPPG season in 2024 (18.3 ppg), right after setting his previous low in 2023 (18.4 ppg) since taking over as the starter. His ADP is now teetering on the edge of the 1st round. Is this the window to buy a legendary signal-caller for the back nine of his career and cash in on the dip? Or does C.J. Stroud bounce back with a newly loaded offense while the 1.05 brings a shiny new rookie to the roster?
TEAM A | C.J Stroud and 1.05
PROs
- Stroud is only 23-years old.
- Tetairoa McMillan, TreVeyon Henderson, and Cam Ward are all premium rookies who could be available at the 1.05.
CONs
- The limited rushing attempts may cap Stroud’s ceiling.
TEAM B | Patrick Mahomes, Tucker Kraft, and 2.04
PROs
- Patrick Mahomes is hoping to rewrite the record books.
- Tucker Kraft is an emerging TE.
- The 2.04 offers a solid swing at talent, with players like Jayden Higgins, Cam Skattebo, and Kyle Williams all potentially in range.
CONs.
- Giving up a high-end rookie prospect always stings.
VERDICT: Team B wins by a significant margin
Mahomes will be 30 entering the 2025 season, but quarterbacks don’t age like skill players. Some of the sweetest notes come late in a career, just ask Brady, Brees, and Manning, all of whom delivered huge fantasy seasons well past 30. Mahomes is within striking distance of the record books, hungry to have his name etched among those all-time greats. He’s not the type to coast on past accomplishments; he’s chasing more, and that makes him as dangerous as ever. I would rather be buying the Mahomes market value dip, than trade away one of the most stable QBs over the next 7-8 years.

Derrick Henry for D.K. Metcalf

Inevitable_Live is a “contender in need of a RB.”
When a championship window is open, you have to take full advantage. Inevitable_Live is ready to strike in 2025 but knows the roster needs a running back upgrade. His RB room, Brian Robinson, Tony Pollard, and Aaron Jones, doesn’t scream “championship caliber,” so the question is whether the rest of the roster can lift it, and if Henry completes it?
At QB, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow are both first-round startup picks and top-tier weekly fantasy starters, though the depth behind them is shaky. At WR, he boasts the Bengals’ superstack of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, paired with CeeDee Lamb and D.K. Metcalf. Tight ends Mark Andrews and Tucker Kraft are solid starters.
This roster has elite pieces but serious depth concerns. So, is flipping Metcalf for Derrick Henry the right move to push this team over the top?
TEAM A | Derrick Henry
PROs
- Henry is positioned to be a top-scoring fantasy player, currently a top 15 pick in bestball formats and redraft leagues.
CONs
- The wheels will fall off King Henry eventually… they have to, right?
TEAM B | D.K. Metcalf
PROs
- With Aaron Rodgers primed to funnel him a steady stream of targets, Metcalf could be headed for the best season of his career.
CONs
- Metcalf’s production will be less predictable than a bellcow RB on a run-first team.
VERDICT: Team A fills a big hole on their team, but opens another one in the process.
The deal is fair value for a dynasty team and beneficial for both sides. Inevitable_Live has a competitive roster, but depth is thin; one or two key injuries could turn a championship run into a midseason fire sale. In a vacuum, I want Derrick Henry over DK Metcalf for a contender, but for this team, I’d rather keep both and find another path to acquiring Henry. As a contender, my 2026 1st round pick is always a chip I’m willing to put on the table, or I’d look to leverage players like Jalen Milroe and Luther Burden to tempt a rebuilder into taking the youth upside.
That said, don’t just send your 2026 1st straight up for Henry. Get something back, whether it’s a later pick or a few dart throws. Trading that pick for a short term player might feel like a loss, but when your 1st becomes the 1.12 instead of the 1.07, you’ll be glad you pulled the trigger.

This is more of an outlier deal, unless the Henry and Kamara owner is ready to rebuild and running low on patience. But for a contender, it’s a smash accept. Landing two RB1 rentals for a pair of 2nds, even if they’re early, is a clear win for the 2025 season.

Bundling your 3rd and 4th with that 1st to add a weekly flex option alongside your primary trade target is a savvy way to turn lower rookie picks into tangible production.
