It was as clear as the sky is blue that Allen Robinson was over the Chicago Bears and wanted to be gone from there. Watching him play in the limited time he did showed that he was playing out the year until he could finally choose the place he wanted to play for. Former Coach Matt Nagy and the Bears front office refused to sign A-Rob to a long-term deal, but instead, the franchise tagged him for two straight years.
Now, Robinson looks refreshed and rejuvenated after signing a huge three-year deal with the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams to replace Robert Woods. The deal is for $46.5 million and allows the Rams to add a big-time WR next to Cooper Kupp. A-Rob wants to win a Super Bowl.
2021 Season Recap
Watch a Chicago Bears game, one of the twelve that Robinson played in, and you will see that he didn’t want to be on the field. I don’t blame him. He wanted to protect his body and mind so that he could get the big pay-day that had eluded him for multiple off-seasons. Robinson’s worst full season in the NFL in 2021 with the tanking Chicago Bears. He garnered 66 targets and caught 38 of them for 410 yards, a touchdown, and a 10.8 yards per catch average. It didn’t help that he was catching passes from Nick Foles, Andy Dalton, and a beleaguered rookie in Justin Fields. I think he’s beyond happy to be out of the Windy City.
2022 Season Projections
Down in the bright sunny beaches of Los Angeles, I fully expect a bounce-back season for Robinson. He’ll be playing with the best supporting cast he’s ever played with. He will no longer be the offense’s focus and get double coverage. Robinson is playing in his age-29 season, which is still in his prime. He’ll be catching passes from the best QB he has played with, Matthew Stafford.
That’s why I have him predicted to perform at a WR2 level next season. I expect his numbers to resemble Robert Woods from two years ago. There’s even potential for Robinson to get some more rushing due to the Rams offense that asks their wide receivers to do everything. These stats equate to a 13.6 PPR ppg average. Plenty good enough to help a contending team push for the playoffs as their WR2/3. There will be blowup games for Robinson, but expect a consistent season out of a rejuvenated wide receiver.
Buy/Sell Allen Robinson
Due to Robinson’s age, I would say that he only belongs on contending teams in dynasty. Yes, he has probably three years of his prime left, but the potential for a downturn can happen at any moment. I think Robinson will age more gracefully as he doesn’t rely on speed for his game. Playing in Los Angeles, where the pressure isn’t all on him, will help. Due to this, I’d only buy if I am pushing for the championship. He’s worth two seconds at this point; maybe throw in a third.
Perhaps you get someone eager that thinks he’s the last piece they need and offers a single first. If that happens, I’m taking it. Robinson will score too much on a rebuilding team and tank your tank. He’ll also mess with your max points if that is standard in your league. The best bet is to trade him to a contender.
Summary
Robinson has finally escaped the clutches of the Chicago Bears. He signed a big contract down in Hollywood, where he would seek to help the Rams win another Super Bowl. He’s replacing Woods in the offense. This means he will have plenty of WR2/3 weeks with a high floor. I’d be shocked if he didn’t see at least 7-9 targets a game.
Due to his being 29, Robinson is best suited for contending teams in dynasty. He’ll throw off a rebuild. Try to acquire him if you can, as he’s going to be a strong WR3 for a championship team.
