Bowl Game Preview: New Years Week

With bowl games in full swing here are some of the levy and NFL draft prospects that you need to keep an eye on in this weeks games

College football bowl games are officially in full swing. While we have seen a historic amount of games cancelled due to covid, there are still several intriguing matchups on the slate this week. In this part of our bowl game preview I will give you some of the bowl games that you need to make sure to watch, and some of the devy and NFL draft prospects that you need to keep an eye on. So without further ado, let’s dive right in.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl

This bowl game features a matchup between Wake Forest and Wisconsin. Both teams come into this game with a .500 record but have shown some inconsistency in their play this season.  Wake forest should have their hands full with a Wisconsin defense that ranks first in the country allowing only 253.5 yards per game. I anticipate this to be a low scoring affair with Wisconsin beating Wake Forest 21-17.

Wake Forest

Donovan Greene (rs-Fresh)- WR Devy

While Greene’s stats may not pop off the screen for you, 23 receptions for 460 yards and 2 TD’s, it’s what he has done in the absence of WR Sage Surratt that is impressive. He has shown the ability to be a contested catch freak and has shown an ability to run good routes and be a YAC monster. His most memorable game was against UNC where he had 8 catches for 170 yards and 2 TDs. If he can improve on his consistency he will be a force soon enough.

Graham Mertz (rs-Fresh)- QB Devy

Mertz exploded onto the scene in his first start, completing 95% of his passes and setting a school record with 5 touchdown passes. Since that start however he has cooled off. He’s only thrown 1 touchdown since then to 5 interceptions. Hopefully he can step up this game and improve on his sluggish performance recently.

Jalen Berger (Freshman)- RB Devy

Berger has been out for the last two games due to covid but is slated to make his return to the lineup in this game. He looks to be the starter and thus far has been the most impressive back of the season for this Wisconsin team. He will face a Wake Forest team allowing nearly 200 yards per game on the ground. This could be a blow up game for Berger.

Jake Furgeson (Junior)- TE NFL Draft Prospect

Ferguson is part of a loaded class of tight ends in this year’s NFL draft. This season he has 29 receptions for 284 yards and 4 TDs. He comes into the game as Wisconsin’s leading receiver and is a tight end prospect you need to keep an eye on.

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic

This bowl game features two high powered offenses in Oklahoma and Florida. Florida comes in with a Quarterback that is leading FBS in passing yards. Meanwhile Oklahoma boasts a quarterback that will no doubt be a top pick in next year’s draft. Both teams are ranked in the top 11 in passing offense and I anticipate this game to be a shootout. Im taking Florida in one of the highest scoring games of this week, 37-34

Kyle Trask (Senior)- QB NFL Draft

Trask has seen a historic rise in NFL Draft stock this season. He has passed for 4,125 yards, the most in the FBS, and has 43 touchdowns to just 5 interceptions. Trask is smart and accurate with the ball and can make all of the throws. Although he will be without 2 of his top pass catchers this game in Toney and Pitts, i still expect trask to get it done in this game

Spencer Rattler (rs-Fresh)- QB Devy

Rattler is one of the best up and coming QB prospects. He shows elite arm talent and an ability to feel pressure and extend plays all while keeping his eyes downfield. His game film is littered with plays of him throwing the ball across his body on a dime. While he’s still young and has some things to work on in his decision making process i anticipate him to be one of the first quarterbacks off the board in his class in the NFL Draft

Marvin Mims (Freshman)- WR Devy

While all eyes this year were on wease and haselwood, mims has been the WR that has shined in this offense with rattler. He is a speed and big play threat for this team and shows soft hands. He is the team’s leading receiver and has a bright future with the sooners.

Lockhead Martin Armed Forces Bowl

The Armed Forces Bowl pitts Tulsa vs Mississippi State. Both teams have had offensive woes this year. Mississippi state’s rushing attack ranks last in the FBS. Meanwhile Tulsa ranks 57th in the nation in passing yards and 74th when it comes to putting the ball in the endzone. I expect this to be a low scoring game but am taking Tulsa 17-14.

Mississippi State

Jo’Quavious Marks (Freshman)- RB Devy

Marks came into Mississippi State as the #16th ranked running back in his class. Unfortunately, with Hill his path to significant carries was limited. After Hill opted out Marks turned his first significant role as lead back into 12 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. With Mississippi States struggles Marks looks to be the lone bright spot on the team and his somebody to keep an eye on.

Autozone Liberty Bowl

The Autozone Liberty bowl gives us a matchup between two football teams that have shown glimpses of greatness but have underperformed this season as well. West Virginia comes in at 5-4 on the season but is 1-3 against ranked opponents. Meanwhile, Army has significant wins over teams like Navy and Air Force. I anticipate this game to be an interesting one and am taking Army 21-14

Unfortunately  there are no devy or NFL draft prospects that i am watching in this game.
