Hello Nerds! The DynastyNerds writers are here once again to provide you with your weekly starts and sits. We will be making our recommendations based on weekly consensus rankings from FantasyPros. Here are the cast and the position groups they will be covering to help you win your week. Follow us, friend us, stalk us, whatever floats your boat!
- QB: Mike Liu (@MikeMeUpP)
- RB: Erik Kortz (@ekballer)
- WR: Tristan Cook (@tristancook_)
- TE: Mychal Warno (@dynastydadmike)
- FLEX: Tyler Grzegorek (@tyler_grez)
Your boy is here to kick things off with quarterbacks! QBs are important decisions to make week-to-week, especially if you’re streaming. I’ll be covering off both single QB and Superflex formats here by offering some start options beyond the top 12 QBs every week.
If you’ve been following along so far, we’ve been rolling with the picks, hitting 16 of 25 or a 64% hit rate. Hopefully, we can keep this good streak going. Without further to do, let’s get it!
P.S. You’ll notice that I have only included pictures of GOATShew in this edition because that’s how much respect we need to put on his name!
Lock, Stock & Smoking Starts of the Week
Goatner Minshew vs. New Orleans Saints (Expert Ranking: QB16)
-1 Jaguars with 44 O/U → Jaguars 22.5 Cardinals 21.5
Week 5 (QB8 – 21.2 Points): 26/44 for 374 passing, 2 TD, 0 INT / 7 carries for 42 rushing
Making his 2nd appearance on this list but I just have to do include him given the experts continue to disrespect the GOAT with this absurdly low ranking. Through 5 weeks, Minshew is the QB11. If you follow me on Twitter, hopefully, you would’ve got him for free in most dynasty leagues as a stash. Enjoy that one because, given the QB landscape, he might be a league winner. I have Minshew as a top 10 option this week at home against the saints. The beauty of it is he provides such a safe weekly floor given his rushing. Although he may not have as high of a ceiling as some of the other elite options, he definitely isn’t someone that will lose you your week and is probably one of the best QB2s right now for SF/2QB formats. He has yet to score less than 16 points per game! Did you know that through 5 weeks, Minshew is the only QB to finish in the top 10 and throw for over 300 yards against the Panthers? Other QBs on that list include Watson, Goff, Winston, and Murray. Yet Minshew stands on top of all of them while doing it on the road in a nail biter. I guess I’ll just keep yelling from atop this hill but Minshew is the real deal and an absolute stud. There is a good chance that Foles rides the bench as the most expensive backup in the league even when he returns. Just a heads up that Minshew will likely make this list more than once going forward with one of the best upcoming ROS schedules for QBs.
Kyle Allen @ Tampa Bay Buccs (Expert Ranking: QB20)
-2 Panthers with 47 O/U → Panthers 24.5 Buccs 22.5
Week 5 (QB18 – 11.6 Points): 17/30 for 181 passing, 1 TD, 0 INT
Yep, I’m dipping back into the well again this week despite getting burned by this pick in week 4 but we need to have short memories in fantasy and assess the situation. I think Allen has actually been much better than the stats suggest from what I’ve seen but more importantly, he gets the Buccs D this week. The same D that has been getting torched week to week handing out top QB performances like they’re Oprah, including a QB1 overall finish by Danny Dimes in his debut. The Bucs have a very stout run D that held CMC to a quiet night in the last matchup and just came off holding Kamara to an RB22 performance. They’re going to force Allen to beat them through the air. And if we think back to the first matchup, I counted no less than 8 instances of Cam completely missing Samuel and Moore on wide-open throws. I am expecting to Allen to at least convert on some of those and make this Bucs secondary pay. Fire up Moore and Samuel this week as well. If he burns me again, I’ll be more cautious but I think this is a decent matchup to play him.
Kirk Cousins vs Philadelphia Eagles (Expert Ranking: QB14)
-3 Vikings with 44 O/U → Vikings 23.5 Eagles 20.5
Week 5 (QB9 – 20.5 Points): 22/27 for 306 passing, 2 TD, 0 INT
Some may be shocked by this stat line but I guess I can’t be. I’ve been saying to play everyone against the Giants secondary but for some reason left Cousins out of my streams last week. So it’ll make complete sense now that I’m saying to start him this week that he go out there and put up a dud. That’s how fantasy works right? But on the real, no one is running on the Eagles right now. Even with an elite back like Dalvin Cook, I think the Vikings will need to rely on the air to come out of this with a W. Philly’s secondary which was already a dumpster fire to begin with, has recently been ravaged by injury. They’re marching out future grocery baggers out there to try and stop 2 of the best talents at the WR position. Now, who knows what’s going to happen with all this Diggs drama but as long as he starts, both he and Thielen should have no problems getting open this Sunday. And I also expect most of Cook’s damage to come through passing down work which should all benefit Cousins. This isn’t my favorite pick ever but I also don’t want to come out here and tell you all to start Mahomes. Based on what’s left, I think he’s a decent option to outperform his ranking this week and more importantly, should be available on most waivers for those of you like me looking to stream.
Risky Business Sits of the Week
Dak Prescott @ New York Jets (Expert Ranking: QB8)
-7.5 Patriots with 44 O/U → Cowboys 25.5 Redskins 18.5
Week 5 (QB7 – 23.2 Points): 27/44 for 463 passing, 2 TD, 3 INT / 4 carries for 27 rushing
Going to go against the grain on this one. Although the Cowboys are heavy favorites, they are traveling and this is a game where I expect them to rely more heavily on Zeke and the run. They’ve now lost in back to back games by putting the game in Dak’s hands and he has failed for the most part. Not saying that Dak is bad by any means and given the match-up, this should be a pretty easy win for the Cowboys but even with Darnold back, I think the Jets might struggle to put up points. Dak scored the majority of his points last week playing catch-up against the Packers, a situation that they won’t be in this week in a much easier matchup. Will most likely be playing from ahead all game which should mean more opportunities for Zeke. For the same reasons why we should’ve been fading Wentz last week, I’m slapping the fade on Dak this week in what would appear to be a smash opportunity. Going to be hard to return the QB8 value this week, especially when Minshew is going to be dropping his Big D swagger on everyone.
Jared Goff vs. San Francisco 49ers (Expert Ranking: QB11)
-3.5 Rams with 50.5 O/U → Rams 27 Seahawks 23.5
Week 5 (QB12 – 17.9 Points): 29/49 for 395 passing, 1 TD, 1 INT
For as long as the experts keep overrating Goff, he will keep making my sit list. Even though he met expectations last week, albeit barely, it was done so once Seattle decided to play prevent defense for what appeared to be the entire second half. 49ers low-key have one of the best defenses in the NFL and that popped up on the screen on MNF when they took Baker and the Browns through the shredder. The Rams OL haven’t been much better than the Browns if we’re being honest and Goff under pressure has a striking resemblance to Derek Carr. If the 49ers watch any film review at all on the Rams, they’ll realize that. I’m expecting Bosa to have another monster game supported by Sherman and crew on the back end. 49ers also happen to lead the NFL in rushing plays at 56.6%. Given how Jimmy G has looked, I’m expecting Shannahan to keep things on the ground to run this thing out once they get a lead. Normally I target home favorites with high O/U for QBs but I’m going against the grain for this one cause I just feel it in my gut. And we all know that you can never go wrong going with your gut…except when you do. Nevertheless, I’m betting against the Goff led rams in this one.
Philip Rivers vs Pittsburgh Steelers (Expert Ranking: QB13)
-7 Chargers with 41 O/U → Chargers 24 Seahawks 17
Week 5 (QB29 – 4.1 Points): 32/48 for 211 passing, 0 TD, 2 INT
And finally, we got the classic old man rivers meltdown game. Despite throwing the rock 48 times and completing ⅔ of them, he only got 211 yards in a putrid performance. The main reason was that over half of those completions were dump-offs to Ekeler who set a single-game receptions record for running backs at 15. I know everyone is freaking out about the Steelers now that Rudolph is out but if we’re being honest, Rudolph hasn’t been that good anyway. Yes, it’s a 3rd string QB but I expect the Steelers to channel the ways of their past and rely on the ground game with Conner and their defense to keep this game competitive. Without their star safety, the Chargers have been very beatable on the ground giving up over 100 yards to Lindsay just last week. And they just lost their starting center as well which means Rivers will be relying on a converted guard in Dan Feeney to lead the charge. Meanwhile, the Steelers have been putting up quite the campaign coming off of a game where they just made LJax and the Ravens look quite pedestrian. I just hope they make the adjustment to put an actual DB on Allen this time instead of trying to cover the best slot receiver in the league with a linebacker like last year when Allen made that entire defense his grandchildren by putting up a stat line of 14 for 148 yards and a TD. Having Minkah there should help this time around and I’m expecting a low scoring affair here.
