Dynasty losers: 2021 NFL Draft Edition

The NFL Draft can be rough for veteran Dynasty Assets @andy_buckler takes a look at 5 players that lost some value due to incoming rookies.

NFL draft season is an exciting time for Dynasty managers. We finally get to see where the prospects we’ve been touting land in the NFL. On the other hand, we wait anxiously to see which rookies will hurt the stock of our veteran assets. Not everyone can come out winners! So, let’s take a look at five assets that lost the most value during draft weekend!

1. James Robinson-RB, Jaguars

Yikes! Robinson was by far the biggest loser of the entire draft. The UDFA darling from a season ago will see his usage take a massive dip with the Jaguars selecting running back Travis Etienne with the 25th pick of the first round. Urban Meyer wanted explosive playmakers to pair with quarterback Trevor Lawrence. He got that with the former Clemson running back.

Etienne will be a factor for the Jags on day one. I expect him to take the majority of the third-down work from Robinson as well as the majority of the carries in the backfield. Robinson should maintain a role in the offense as a grinder on early-downs, but his dynasty outlook has gotten extremely murky. I expect him to be an RB3 for fantasy purposes going forward. If you roster Robinson, it’s best to hold him until we see how he’s deployed.

2. Robby Anderson-WR, Panthers

Anderson is coming off of a career year in Carolina. His competition for targets just went up with the selection of LSU wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. in the second round. The former LSU receiver was a projected first-round pick but fell to the Panthers due to injury concerns. Anderson should maintain his role as the WR2 in the offense in 2021. However, he is entering the final year of his contract in 2021. I expect him to be on a new team entering the 2022 season with the addition of Marshall.

3. Miles Sanders-RB, Eagles

The Eagles selected Memphis running back Kenneth Gainwell in the fifth round of the draft. While I don’t think Miles Sanders takes a massive hit in the short term, I believe this hurts his potential. Gainwell is a shifty back that thrives in the receiving game, which is where Sanders struggled last season.

I project Gainwell to be heavily involved in obvious passing-down situations while getting a few carries on top of that. With Sanders coming up on a potential payday, with his injury history, I could see Gainwell being a very valuable dynasty asset come 2022 and beyond. Gainwell is just a 5th round selection, so you should not be panic trading Miles Sanders. However, his upside does take a hit here.

4. Melvin Gordon-RB, Broncos

There was a big three at running back in this draft, and Denver landed one of them in Javonte Williams with their second-round pick. Williams was touted by some as the RB1 in the entire class but came in as the consensus RB2. This move destroys Melvin Gordon’s value in Dynasty leagues. Gordon, who recently turned 28, will be entering the final year of his deal with the Broncos.

I expect him to be involved early on, with his role fading down the stretch and going to Williams. This is likely the last year of Melvin Gordon as a relevant dynasty asset.

5. Christian Kirk-WR,Cardinals

Value Based-Players; Teams A-Z – Arizona Cardinals’ Christian Kirk: Livin’ the Beta Life

It just never happened for Kirk. Christian Kirk is a talented player but hasn’t been able to put it all together for fantasy managers. With the selection of wide receiver Rondale Moore in the second round, Kirk’s value takes a big hit. Rondale Moore should step right in and take over Kirk’s role, moving him to the WR3 at best on a low-volume offense. Moore is a very exciting prospect who should be able to make an immediate impact for the Cardinals. If you happen to roster Kirk in dynasty leagues, he’s no more than a WR4/bench stash.
