Dynasty Moves to Make this Preseason

@TheHQNerd pops in with moves you should be making this preseason leading up to the NFL season.

Summer is in high gear. Training camps have started across the National Football League. Soon, we will see actual professional football played. As we near closer to preseason games being played, let’s take a look at a few moves you may want to make to your dynasty teams during the preseason leading up to the start of the NFL season.

Closely Monitor Camp News

This is a really important time of year in dynasty to keep an edge over your opponents across your dynasty leagues. Keep an eye on which rookies impress early in camp. In deeper dynasty formats, there could still be a few rookies that are available on waiver wires. Remember this time last year, Darnell Mooney and James Robinson were essentially still available and not on the dynasty radar for the most part.

It’s not just the rookies we need to keep track of. Stay in tune with all news surrounding teams. Even a veteran player with a grim dynasty outlook could potentially surprise. Logan Thomas was a dynasty afterthought until he started getting camp buzz last summer. It wasn’t long ago that Darren Waller was a forgotten fantasy asset who started to make noise in training camp. Now he’s a superstar.

Scour the Waiver Wire

Working the waiver wire is one of the most crucial factors in fantasy football. A lot of people think working the wire is more of a redraft strategy. It’s as essential in dynasty football as well.  Sure, across dynasty leagues, you won’t find exciting names to grab more times than not. Don’t let that deter you. I mentioned a few names already of players that have become household names that were left for dead who now have immense value in dynasty.

Take the time to go through all your leagues and closely look at the current situation on the waiver wire. Here’s a list of a few names to look for those with deep roster spots.

  • Xavier Jones, RB Los Angeles Rams
  • Jake Funk, RB Los Angeles Rams
  • Qadree Ollison, RB Atlanta Falcons
  • Marquise Goodwin, WR Chicago Bears
  • Randall Cobb, WR Green Bay Packers
  • Ihmir Smith-Marsette, WR Minnesota Vikings
  • Jacob Eason QB, Indianapolis Colts
  • Noah Gray, TE Kansas City Chiefs
  • Kenny Yeboah, TE New York Jets
  • Dan Arnold, TE Carolina Panthers

Some leagues have IR eligibility. As teams put players on the PUP list, you can place them on IR in your league right now and add another player. Take advantage of this.

Beware of Roster Cloggers

There’s nothing worse in dynasty than dealing with players who have become roster cloggers for your team. Players who are simply taking up space for your team. A roster clogger can come in multiple forms. An aging player past their prime. A young player who was previously touted who has flopped most of their career. Somebody buried on a depth chart. If you don’t see a viable path to relevancy anymore, it’s time to cut bait.

Don’t be afraid to dump a roster clogger before the season in favor of a young promising player or a veteran who has emerged into a starting role.

I’ve identified a few players that depending on your league’s roster sizes, have become a roster clogger and can be dropped.

  • Scotty Miller, WR Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Kerryon Johnson, RB Philadelphia Eagles
  • Hunter Renfrow, Las Vegas Raiders
  • Benny Snell, RB Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Preston Williams, WR Miami Dolphins
  • Todd Gurley, RB Free Agent
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR Green Bay Packers
  • Dawson Knox, TE Buffalo Bills
  • Chris Herndon, TE New York Jets
  • Lamical Perine, RB New York Jets

Continue Adding Depth

This one is a significant step, especially if you think your team is a contender this season. If 2020 taught us anything with Covid-19 and injuries, it’s that you need to make sure your team has viable depth

There’s still some uncertainties regarding Covid this year. It’s never a bad idea to keep building up your depth on your dynasty team. We can’t predict the future. Don’t be left empty-handed in the middle of the season, desperately looking to trade.

In Superflex leagues, the two most important positions you want solid depth at are QB and RB. Make sure you have a solid QB3 on your team at all times. It’s a good idea to have another QB or two beyond that as well who is a starter or a reliable backup with upside. In terms of RBs, you can never have enough. Compile as many as you can.

Being prepared for all situations during the season in dynasty goes a long way. Hopefully, a few of these tips provide assistance towards a prosperous 2021 dynasty football season ahead.
