It finally happened; after days of speculation, Pittsburgh wide receiver and the reigning Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison entered the transfer portal. While it is rumored that he is destined for one specific spot, he remains steadfast in giving other teams a chance.
An important question in all of this remains, though, what will the fallout be?
One would have to imagine that at some point, the idea of being able to offer a player a NIL deal to transfer is going to become a major no-no. The benefit that schools have at this moment, though, is the entire NCAA is stuck in limbo. President Mark Emmert is in the process of being replaced, and his replacement has yet to even be hinted at. Until there is a more stable situation in Indianapolis at the NCAA offices, one has to doubt any change comes.
The only change that is on the horizon is with Addison. While it is rumored that he may go to USC on a nearly $3 million NIL deal, other schools may and should be in the hunt. It is all about the long-play for Addison at this point. Several schools offer him greater long-term benefits than a short-term NIL deal.
Alabama Crimson Tide
With five first-round WRs produced in the last five years, it is safe to say they have established themselves as WRU. They have a crowded receiver room which may deter him from going there, but it shouldn’t. Competing against guys like Jermaine Burton, Christian Leary, and Tyler Harrell should push him. Two of them came in this year from the transfer portal, so you know Alabama is active there. Adding Addison would give them another two or three first-rounders this year.
Texas Longhorns
The unique part of Jordan Addison going to the Texas Longhorns isn’t the fact he would be joining arguably the most well-rounded skill group in college. It is that his former receivers coach at Pittsburgh is now making his coaching living own in Austin. What the school has done with Xavier Worthy should also be a huge selling going to Addison. He would have Quinn Ewers throwing him the ball, which would also be a plus, but that offense having so many new faces on an unproven team may stir him away.
Maryland Terrapins
I will be honest with this selection; I give this almost no chance of happening. That being said, let’s take a walk and discuss how good an idea this is.
The team has emerging quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, showing how explosive he can have the Terrapin offense. They brought in Jacob Copeland from Florida this offseason from the transfer portal; why not make a run at Addison? Addison is a Frederick, Maryland native to boot and his only other official visit listed outside of Pittsburgh was to Maryland. If we aren’t done digging down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole, Addison could be a top 30 visit for the Ravens, being a local kid. A full heel turn from leaving Pittsburgh to eventually playing for the Ravens would be something that not even WWE could write.
All of these places will probably not matter at the end of the day. Turning down three million from USC doesn’t seem like a decision a 20-year-old does.
