George Kittle 2.0- TJ Hockenson

Iowa is beginning to look like a hot bed for Tight Ends. After producing arguably, the most valuable dynasty TE in George Kittle as well as Dallas Clark, they have 2 more high-end prospects entering the 2019 draft. Those are Noah Fant and TJ Hockenson.

I’ve previously stated my love for Fant numerous times and wrote about him a few months ago. But I probably like his 6’5” 250-pound teammate even more!

Like Kittle, he can do everything you require of a tight end at a high level. He’s a fantastic blocker, which will keep on the field early into his career, and he also has the athleticism, route running and catching ability to be a vertical or possession threat. He can play both the F and Y position and has garnered a ton of momentum in recent weeks as the top TE in a loaded class.

As you would expect, Hockenson was a red shirt freshman in 2016 until Kittle entered the draft. He then entered the fold in 2017 starting alongside Noah Fant. His most noticeable performance was against Ohio State when he finished with 71 yards and 2 TDs. Hockenson’s breakout came in his 2018 campaign, finishing with 717 yards and 6 TDs on his way to winning the John Mackey Award. A breakdown of his college stats can be seen below:

Hockenson has entered the draft early but he does not look raw like most young TEs do. Most mocks are currently projecting Hockenson to be an early first round selection with the Packers named as the most suitable candidate. For a Tight End, his 2018 statistics were quite impressive but imagine how dominant he could have been if he weren’t sharing the field with Fant.

If you wanted an idea of his versatility, these 3 plays highlight his strengths perfectly. He’s a relentless blocker:

He has YAC ability with a toughness to fight for yards:

And he can make a catch through almost any contact over the middle:

In such a strong TE class, you’d be wise to invest some first round picks in the elite talent. It’s not often that there are so many strong Tight Ends available. Given the volatility of the position lately and Hockenson’s elite potential, I expected to see him rocket up draft boards over the next few months, even as high as 1.06. If you’re in desperate need of a Tight End, make sure you grab some shares of Hockenson, Fant, or Irv Smith.
