Getting Defensive: IDP Start/Sit Week 12

@Glosser13 brings you the Week 12 start/sit for your IDP leagues. Soak up all the IDP content you can on this holiday weekend.

Hey Nerds! As we continue to grow our IDP content here at Dynasty Nerds, we are excited to bring you a weekly start and sit for the 2020 NFL season. The weekly recommendations are based on our default scoring IDP 123. Players will be broken down by the three major positions (DL, LB, DB), with five to six defensive players per week. It’s common knowledge that you start your studs every week, which doesn’t change on the defensive side of the ball. This article will help you make the more difficult decisions before hitting submit on Sunday morning much easier on you.

Welcome back Nerds. Another week closer to the best time of year for dynasty managers the playoffs. We work all year round in building our teams for this time of year, and hopefully, you have your playoff spot locked up. If you don’t, that’s even more reason to check out this week’s start and sit players. The new format is quick breakdowns on multiple players to give you more options, so there will be no breakdown from last week. Let’s get ready for Week 12 of the NFL season.

Defensive Line

Emmanuel Ogbah  DL

Miami Dolphins vs New York Jets

Emmanuel Ogbah’s streak of eight straight games with at least 0.5 sack ended in Week 11. That doesn’t take anything away from the great season he’s having for IDP dynasty managers. Ogbah is the DE5 and DL10 overall in IDP123, scoring heading into Week 12. The Dolphins best pass rushing threat faces the New York Jets this week, against which he posted a monster game in week six, posting five tackles and two sacks on his way to a 28-fantasy point performance. There’s a very strong chance Ogbah starts another sack streak up this week.

Carlos Dunlap DL

Seattle Seahawks vs Philadelphia Eagles

Carlos Dunlap forced his way out of Cincinnati, and it has been a huge boost to his IDP value for the second half of the 2020 season. Dunlap struggled with getting snaps and pressures in the first seven games of the season with only one sack. Since joining the Seahawks in Week 8, he has already collected 3.5 sacks, including two in his last game. The former Bengals Pro Bowler will get his second chance to play the Eagles this season, a game he recorded his highest snaps (76) and tackles (9) of the season earlier this year. Carlos Dunlap will have a wonderful chance to add to his sack total against the NFL’s most sacked QB, Carson Wentz, who has been brought down 40 times already this year.

*Bonus – Boom/Bust Start

Oliver Vernon DL

Cleveland Browns vs Jacksonville Jaguars

Olivier Vernon has stepped up in the absence of front runner for NFL defensive player of the year candidate Myles Garrett. Garrett is slated to miss his second straight game after testing positive for Covid-19. This is a bummer for dynasty managers who will see the NFL sack leader miss two games against very favorable matchups. Olivier Vernon, who was still likely on most waiver wires prior to this week, has filled in, recording five sacks in his last three games. Before Week 8, Vernon had one double digit fantasy performance this season. Between Week 8 and Week 11, he has scored 68 fantasy points. It’s important to note that Vernon only has 95 total points on the season, but you need to ride the hot hand here in a very favorable matchup against the Jaguars.

Ndamukong Suh DL

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Kansas City Chiefs

Firstly, let me say in DT required leagues, this is more than likely a no brainer that you have to start Suh with how thin the position is unless you have better options. In DL designation leagues, I’m sitting Suh this week where I can. The loss of Vita Vea has seemed to affect Suh’s ability to get favorable matchups and get after opposing quarterbacks and he draws a matchup this week against Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs QB has been sacked only 12 times this season. The Tampa Bay defense has far superior pass rushers in Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq Barrett who benefit from Suh doing the dirty work on the inside. Suh’s role has become to take on the double teams so others can get home, which makes his IDP scoring value from a fantasy points perspective lower.

Justin Houston DL

Indianapolis Colts vs Tennessee Titans

Old reliable Justin Houston posted a double-digit performance, including a sack in Week 11 against a Packers offensive line that has only allowed 11 sacks this season. Houston has been up and down all season long but is still being rostered in nearly every dynasty league. Justin Houston has 4.5 sacks this season and looks like he will likely fall short of his third consecutive 180+ fantasy point season. The Colts will play the Titans for the second time in three weeks. Houston failed to record a tackle in their last meeting and hasn’t played 40 snaps in a single game in over a month. There are much safer options with your fantasy playoff hopes potentially on the line.

Rashaan Evans LB

Tennessee Titans Vs Indianapolis Colts

A huge opportunity for one of the more underrated LBs this season. Rashaan Evans will take the role of Jayon Brown, who suffered a season-ending injury last week against the Baltimore Ravens. The former Alabama Crimson Tide has been very consistent this season, with six games with at least seven tackles or more. Evans has only produced two single-digit performances all season, and one was a first-quarter ejection in Week 1 for throwing a punch. Jayon Brown hasn’t played less than 90% of defensive snaps in any game before last week. I can see Evans taking those snaps and potentially putting together some huge games for IDP managers down the stretch.

Alex Singleton LB

Philadelphia Eagles vs Seattle Seahawks

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before but whoever plays the top LB role in a Jim Schwartz defense is IDP gold. We saw this with Nate Gerry despite how awful his PFF grades were, and now enters Alex Singleton. Singleton is coming off five straight games with 13 fantasy points or more, including his third 20+ point performance of the season. Singleton has played 145 snaps recording 26 tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery in the last two weeks. At this point, Singleton is a plug and play start every week until proven otherwise.

*Boom/bust start of the week

Isaiah Simmons LB

Arizona Cardinals vs New England Patriots

I’ve been waiting all year for this one, so forgive me while I have my moment. Finally, my favorite rookie LB had a breakout game, including leading the Cardinals in tackles in Week 11. Simmons has slowly earned more snaps and is showing his versatility. The former Clemson Tiger was able to post a 30-point performance last week despite only having double-digit fantasy points once all season. He’s the ultimate boom or bust player, with a matchup against one of the most dynamic dual-threat QBs Cam Newton. Simmons can likely be used in a spy role this week to limit Cam’s ability to create plays with his legs. If things continue to trend in the right direction, we could see Simmons earn more and more playing time as the season winds down.

Jerome Baker LB

Miami Dolphins vs New York Jets

This one doesn’t feel right, but I’ve never been one to be afraid to take risks. Jerome Baker has three 20+ performances this season, all games in which he played at least 61 snaps. In the last two weeks, Baker has only played a total of 59 snaps combined. Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores has been using more LB matchups to confuse opposing offenses, and Baker’s production has dipped a bit. The Dolphins best LB is currently the LB27 in IDP123 scoring, and if he can just prove to be the every-down LB for the Dolphins, he will be a stud for IDP leagues. The last two weeks have put doubts in my head that the Dolphins want that for their young LB.

A.J. Klein LB

Buffalo Bills vs Los Angeles Chargers

This is one of the more intriguing matchups this weekend, as I’ll be selecting a few players from this game to close out this week’s article. A.J. Klein has fully taken over the role of Matt Milano in the Bills defense. In the past two weeks, Klein has had fantasy performances of 37 and 30 points, including five big plays (three sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery). The journeyman LB has been thriving off turnovers the past two weeks, and although the Bills defense will play rookie QB Justin Herbert, this week, he’s no ordinary rookie. Herbert has only 10 turnovers all season and protects the ball very well for what you’d expect from a rookie signal-caller. While I usually am all in on riding the hot hand this week, I think we see a big dip in production from A.J. Klein.

Defensive Backs

Jabrill Peppers DB

New York Giants vs Cincinnati Bengals

Jabrill Peppers has found his place in this New York Giants defense, and IDP managers couldn’t be happier. Peppers looked lost the first few weeks, still recovering from injuries, but he has been amazing in recent weeks. Since Week 6, Peppers has not played less than 56 snaps or had less than six tackles in any game. That includes four straight 20+ point performances. The Giants safety has been as reliable as they come as a fantasy performer and is on pace for a top 12 DB this season.

Rayshawn Jenkins DB

Los Angeles Chargers vs Buffalo Bills

Rayshawn Jenkins has been criminally underrated this season in IDP leagues. The injury again to Derwin James has set the stage for the former Miami Hurricane to have a big season while starting the year on most waiver wires. Jenkins is on a streak of six straight games with nine fantasy points or more, including four of six games with 15+ points. Jenkins has a safe tackle floor and is producing big weeks without having the splash plays. If those big plays start coming his way, he can have boom weeks that can win you a matchup, and he’s still free in most leagues.

*Boom/bust start of the week

Taron Johnson DB

Buffalo Bills vs Los Angeles Chargers

It’s time to give a cornerback some love. Taron Johnson has been a sneaky good play this year. The Bills secondary has been missing pieces all season, and Johnson has been very productive playing the nickel position. Taron Johnson is very active in run support and isn’t afraid to make tackles. He has at least five tackles in all but two games this season and five games of seven tackles or more. Starting a CB is always a risk, but when you have a tackle floor as safe as Taron Johnson’ it makes the decision easier.

Terrell Edmunds DB

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens

The combination of Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds is finally producing at the level IDP managers have been expecting. Sadly, I believe it’s short-lived as the return of Mike Hilton combined with tough matchups are ahead for the Steelers defense. Terrell Edmunds has played the Baltimore Raven five times in his career, only posting double-digit fantasy points twice that includes a two-point performance this season. In those five meetings, Edmunds has never eclipsed 13 fantasy points. The matchup this week doesn’t favor the Pittsburgh safety.

Marcus Maye DB

New York Jets vs Miami Dolphins

The sell-high window of Marcus Maye has gone and went, but shockingly he’s rostered in more leagues than a player like Rayshawn Jenkins. I think sometimes IDP managers get caught up in bad defenses are always on the field, and more snaps equal more points, which is the case sometimes, just not always. Over the past two weeks, Maye has played 163 snaps with just seven tackles and one forced fumble. His production is just not consistent enough. On top of that, Maye has 129 points this season, with 59 of them in games against the Buffalo Bills. That’s 45.75% of his fantasy points coming against one opponent. I can’t justify trusting Maye when the games count the most as a dynasty manager.
