The moment Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending ankle injury, a new door opened for another quarterback. Luckily the offseason signing of Andy Dalton has so far proved to be a great move. Dak’s injury did spark a ton of rumors that Matthew Stafford could be coming to Dallas. That won’t be happening.
I’ll explain why. I’ll also explain that a similar season-ending scenario happening to a starting quarterback around the league could spark the same interest, with Stafford filling that gap.
Matthew Stafford Heading to Dallas?
Let’s begin with the Dallas Cowboys. They signed Andy Dalton, and so far, he’s played superbly in the one game he played. Dalton went through Cowboys camp and knew the offense well. It showed. Stafford would come in with a hefty contract. There are 22.65 million reasons why he won’t be heading to Dallas, at least this year. Jerry Jones has always had his eyes on Stafford. Born and raised in Texas, Stafford knows his way around and is familiar with the football mecca that is “The Lone Star State.” We’ll leave this as to be continued. If contract negotiations between Dak and Jones go sour, Stafford could be the ultimate option and slightly cheaper route. To be continued.
Bill Belichick & Matthew Stafford, Match made in Heaven?
There is a fond relationship between Detroit Lions GM Bob Quinn and the New England Patriots. Quinn does seem to be on his way out of town if the Lions can’t turn it around. What a wonderful gift it would be for the Pats if he traded Stafford to them, knowing he’s out the door anyway. Cam Newton wants a more extended contract, and so far, the Patriots have stalled talks. We all know Bill Belichick loves a great pocket passer, and Cam doesn’t fit that mold. If Stafford were sent packing to Beantown, I believe this is an upgrade. Stafford can sometimes lose fundamentals, get too relaxed, and even throw sidearm. These mishaps would be corrected with the Pats System that puts the quarterback in highly efficient throwing situations with a more reserved passing environment. I’d even go out on a limb and predict Stafford becomes a Pro Bowl Quarterback with a system like Belichick’s. What will the Patriots trade? For 2021 they have (2) 3rd round picks and (3) 4th round picks. A mix of these should suffice since Stafford does come with a pricey contract against the “Patriot Way.”
Steeltown Stafford has a nice RING to it.
Big Ben Roethlisberger is getting old. Okay, he IS old. He’s also very injury prone, whereas Stafford had a streak of starting 136 games (6th all-time) for the Lions without missing a game due to injury. This stat alone should make the Pittsburgh Steelers plan for the future. Last year both Mason Rudolph and “Duck” Hodges showed that even they aren’t durable or ready to carry the Steeler franchise for the next five years. Imagine Stafford throwing to Juju, Claypool, and other weapons. The Steelers also come with a solid offensive line, something Stafford has rarely seen during his Detroit Lion tenure. What would the Steelers have to give up to sway the Lions? The Steelers currently have (2) 4th round picks and (2) 7th round picks. I don’t see the Lions getting anything higher than a 3rd or 4th due to Stafford’s age and contract.
Best Case Scenario if Detroit Departure is Inevitable?
I think heading to Pittsburgh is the best-case scenario for Stafford out of all of the teams mentioned above. It’s a very cookie-cutter, plug and play veteran quarterback scenario with the team and depth the Steelers have. They also have a quality and veteran coach in Mike Tomlin, who certainly knows how to manage and use pocket passers such as Stafford.
