Will Justin Herbert Finish as the QB1 of 2022?

Justin Herbert is an elite quarterback in the NFL. He didn’t get much fanfare coming out of the 2020 NFL Draft after being selected sixth overall. The Los Angeles Chargers didn’t expect to start him immediately either, but a doctor incident with Tyrod Taylor allowed Herbert to take over at QB. He’s never looked back. Last year, Herbert finished second overall in fantasy points and averaged 23.28 points per game. That’s impressive. Entering his third year in the league, Herbert and the Chargers seek to make the playoffs for the first time in his career.

2021 Season Recap

Herbert has improved by a large margin in each of his first two seasons. After winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2020, Herbert made his first Pro Bowl in 2021. He threw for 38 touchdowns on a 65.9% completion percentage. He had 5,014 yards and 15 interceptions. The clutch Herbert led five game-winning drives. Don’t forget his legs as he rushed for three touchdowns and 302 yards. All around, this was an excellent season for Herbert. No wonder he might finish as the QB1 in fantasy.

2022 Season Projections

Herbert has a fully loaded buggie, sorry, football team ready to win in 2022. After a failure at coaching cost them a playoff shot in 2021, the Chargers went out and got some big-name players like Khalil Mack, JC Jackson, and others. This improved defense should help get the ball back to Herbert, which means even more fantasy points for him and your team. The Chargers will be in a dogfight with the AFC West against the loaded Broncos, Raiders, and consistent Chiefs. With Josh Palmer and Isaiah Spiller expected to contribute in significant ways for the offense, Herbert could be set for a career year.

My projections for Justin Herbert

I have Herbert projected for another top-five finish in fantasy. He will be among the league leaders in yards, touchdowns, and efficiency. I predict he averages 26.8 ppg across his 17 games. This is for scoring that uses six-point touchdowns. Regardless, Herbert is a QB you need on your team in 2022.

Buy/Sell Justin Herbert?

Herbert will be a buy for the next decade. He’s entering his age-24 season. If you have him on your roster, don’t you dare sell him unless you get an insane trade offer. I have a feeling the best is yet to come for Herbie. On my rebuilding teams, if I have him, I won’t be trading him. I know Herbert might score a lot, and in Superflex leagues, replacing a player like him is tough.

You can easily replace elite RBs or WRs. QBs aren’t nearly as easy. He’s an elite player for contending teams as well. He helped me win multiple championships last year. Regardless, if you can buy Herbert for Derek Carr and an early first or three firsts, I would gladly do it. Herbert will provide more value over the long haul and in this season.

Summary

Herbert will be playing for a contract extension this year, along with making the playoffs for the first time. His explosive playmaking makes up for his quiet nature. Herbert’s an elite dynasty asset for any team. He will survive a rebuild, help win a contender a championship, and shouldn’t be traded without a large offer. Herbert is just that good. He reminds me of a more mobile Peyton Manning. Expect another tremendous season from Herbert. He will set career-highs in multiple categories—an elite season for an elite QB.
