Can Jonathan Taylor Remain the RB1 in 2022?

Jonathan Taylor was the absolute best running back in the NFL last year. He was just pure dominance. Think you could tackle him, think again. It was Taylor’s coming-out party in the NFL, showing why the Colts drafted him. I don’t think he could have had a better season. He was the AP Offensive Player of the Year runner-up, an All-Pro, and a Pro Bowler. Taylor led the Colts to the precipice of the playoffs and led many dynasty teams to their championships. I know he won me multiple leagues.

2021 Season Recap

Taylor ran roughshod over the entire league. He just saw opposing defenses like I see ice cream. That’s my favorite thing to eat. He ran for a league-leading 1,811 yards on a league-leading 332 rushes for a league-leading 18 touchdowns. Taylor averaged an INSANE 106+ yards a game.

He didn’t stop there. No, Taylor added 51 targets and caught 40 of them for 360 yards and two touchdowns. The 23-year-old just decimated other teams. He broke 25 tackles and had 941 yards after contact. Those are wild numbers. It was a perfect season for Taylor.

2022 Season Projections

Taylor is entering the 2022 season as the projected RB1 for the season. The Colts added Matt Ryan at QB, who should throw more to Taylor. Couple that with more projected leads for the Colts, and Taylor should get plenty more rushes. He’s had zero injury history and appears to be the next Derrick Henry. Taylor might not reach 332 rushes again nor be expected to maintain the same amount of dominance. He will still do great. The Colts will push for the playoffs, and Taylor will be the driver.

My projections for Jonathan Taylor

As you can see above, these are impressive numbers for an RB. Taylor will be a top-five RB again in 2022. He’ll have competition for No.1 but will stay elite. He would average an amazing 20.8 ppg in PPR with these totals. That’s across 17 games. Taylor should be on your list to add or get if you want to win a championship in dynasty this year.

Buy/Sell Jonathan Taylor?

If you’re rebuilding, there’s no reason to hold onto a dynasty RB1 overall like Jonathan Taylor. He solely belongs on contending rosters. If you’re about to start a rebuild, sell him for two or more early firsts or three firsts overall. He’s worth it to a team that wants to win the championship right now. I won two leagues with Taylor as my RB1.

If you’re competing, you’re likely not going to sell him unless you have an overwhelming amount of RBs. I do see the case to sell high if you can. I might do that if you can get two or three 2023 firsts, especially if one is projected early. I don’t care if I’m competing. Those firsts can buy me another RB, or I can save for the loaded 2023 class. I’d do it if I could get Ekeler and a 2023 first. Ekeler can help me win right now. That first helps me prolong my competing window.

These are the types of moves that help savvy dynasty owners win multiple championships and avoid a lengthy rebuild.

Summary

Once again, I see no reason for Taylor not to repeat as the RB1 of the 2022 season. He’s healthy and playing in an offense built around him. He has a dominant offensive line in front of him. An older QB that knows how to win games and will throw to him. It’s another perfect situation for Taylor. I would consider selling Taylor if I can get a significant return, even competing. Don’t sell him and close your championship window if you can’t get the right price. That is just a dynasty tragedy. If you can get Taylor, I would trade multiple firsts for him. He can win you a championship once again.
