Remember the days when Kenny Golladay was an elite fantasy wide receiver that everyone wanted on their team? He was a Pro Bowler in 2019 with the Detroit Lions. Kenny had back-to-back 1,000+ yard seasons in 2018/19 when he was 25 and 26. Coincidentally, those were the only years he had over 100 targets played in the most games of his career. Over those two years, he missed a single game. In the two years since then, he has missed 14 games. After his miserable 2020 season, Golladay signed a mega deal with the New York Giants to serve as their WR1 for Daniel Jones to grow with. That remains to be seen if it can happen.
2021 Season Recap
Golladay again dealt with injuries in 2021, as he missed three games. Albeit not a ton of his fault, it seemed like when he was healthy, he couldn’t get comfortable in the Giants’ atrocious offense led by Joe Judge. Golladay did see 76 targets and caught only 37 of them for 521 yards and zero touchdowns. He had a career-low 14.1 yards per reception average and failed to catch a touchdown for the first time in his career. His average of only five targets per game was below his career numbers. It was a trying season for Golladay. It didn’t help that Jones either was injured or not playing great behind a woeful offensive line.
Never fear as the hero is here. Gone is scary Joe Judge. In comes offensive mastermind Brian Daboll seeking to fix Jones and resuscitate Golladay’s career. They must use him since he is getting over $21 million this year. It seems like Golladay will finally be used correctly in New York. He’s at his best when running deep routes and using his big 6’4” frame to body out defenders. This didn’t happen much last year. Golladay relies on his size and jumping ability since he’s not fast or a technician in route running. If Daboll can fix Danny Dimes’ arm, this may lead to a re-breakout year for Golladay.
The target share for Golladay will be formidable as I don’t see him getting over 100 targets with Saquon Barkley, WanDale Robinson, Kadarius Toney, and others needing their share too. I can’t give him 100+ targets, especially since he’s a deep threat. Golladay won’t need as many targets to make a significant impact. I’m not sure this is a comeback tour but averaging 10.5 PPR points over 15 games is way better than his last two years. I do have him leading the Giants in targets.
Buy/Sell Kenny Golladay?
I’m buying Golladay for a third-round rookie pick all day right now. He’s got nothing but upside. Entering his age-29 season, Golladay is not meant for a rebuilding team. What are you waiting for if he’s on your roster right now? However, he can potentially become a reliable flex player in the next year or two. If you need some cheap wide receiver depth, you could do far worse than spending a third on Golladay. The upside is he becomes a WR2.
Golladay is a wide receiver with a murky future for the New York Giants. He’s got potential. His value is at the lowest it’s ever been. There’s not much hope for him in the dynasty world. However, buying him for a third-round pick is insanely cheap. There’s little risk. Take a shot at Daboll working his magic. I am. Golladay will perform better this year than he has in years. I believe in Coach Daboll.
