In the dynasty fantasy football landscape, whether you’re managing one league or 50 leagues, there will likely come a time when your team needs to undergo a rebuild, focusing on the future in an effort to return to championship contention.
But how exactly do you rebuild? Is there a specific formula that guarantees success? Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. Every dynasty league is different, and no two rebuilding situations are ever exactly the same. League settings, roster construction, trade markets, and manager tendencies all play a role in determining the best path forward.
At Dynasty Nerds, we can help point you in the right direction. Whether you’re already committed to a rebuild or considering starting one, these strategies can provide a solid foundation and help position your roster to return to contention by the end of the 2028 season.
🔗 Build Your Dynasty

General Approach
To properly rebuild your dynasty roster, you need to do it the right way and in a fair manner. Rebuilding does not mean tanking an entire season just to secure the top rookie pick. Intentionally setting a weak lineup and giving away weekly matchups can hurt league morale and create frustration for the other managers in the league. The goal is to build a contender for the future, not intentionally lose games to secure a higher draft pick.
Trade Away Age
When rebuilding a dynasty team, age is one of the biggest factors to consider when deciding which players to keep and which players to move.
For quarterbacks, you can generally hold onto productive veterans longer than at any other position. Quarterbacks tend to have the longest careers and can continue producing at a high level well into their 30s. However, if you are entering a full rebuild, I would still look to move off quarterbacks once they reach 32-years old and turn them into younger assets. Peak production for most quarterbacks tends to come between ages 26 and 31, though that window can be slightly shorter for mobile quarterbacks as their rushing production begins to decline.
For running backs, you should be much more aggressive about selling. Statistics have shown that running backs experience the sharpest decline of any fantasy position. In many cases, the best time to move a running back is shortly right before their rookie contract is set to expire. There will always be exceptions who remain productive into their age-28 or age-29 seasons, especially pass-catching backs or players who did not enter the league as immediate workhorses. However, in a rebuild, running backs are often the first assets you should consider moving.
For wide receivers, the decline typically starts around age 28. Most receivers hit their prime between ages 22 and 26, with elite players extending that production through age 28 and occasionally into their early 30s. While there are always outliers, they are difficult to predict. If you are rebuilding, wide receivers entering their age-27 or age-28 seasons should be strong sell candidates while their market value remains high.
Tight ends generally have a longer fantasy shelf life than running backs and wide receivers. Their peak production often comes between ages 25 and 29, though recent years have shown that young tight ends are making an impact much earlier in their careers. Because of that, you can usually hold tight ends a little longer during a rebuild. Still, if a tight end is approaching age 28 and carrying significant dynasty value then look to trade them.

Trading Time
While trading players at the right age is important, knowing when to trade players during the dynasty calendar can be just as valuable. There are several different opinions on the best time to make trades, but for rebuilding teams, the ideal time to move aging veterans is often during the fantasy football season when those players are actively producing.
When a veteran is putting up strong fantasy numbers, contenders can clearly see the value that player brings to their lineup. This often allows rebuilding managers to acquire younger players and draft picks at a premium. Two of the best times to make trades are early in the season and around the trade deadline.
The trade deadline is often the final opportunity for contending teams to add pieces for a championship run. Managers chasing a title are usually more willing to pay premium prices for productive veterans who can help them win immediately.
The early part of the season can also be a great time to make deals. Every manager enters the year with expectations for their team, but some quickly find themselves sitting at 1-3 or 0-4. Panic can set in, and those managers may become more aggressive in trading future assets to salvage their season. Rebuilding teams should take advantage of those situations whenever possible.
The offseason can also provide opportunities, though the market behaves differently. Draft picks typically gain value from January through May as rookie hype builds. Because of that, buying draft picks during this period is not always the most efficient use of resources. However, once rookie draft season arrives and managers fall in love with specific prospects, rebuilding teams can capitalize.
While adding elite young rookies should always be a priority during a rebuild, it is important to maximize value whenever possible. If another manager is eager to move up for one of your draft picks, consider trading down while adding future draft capital. Future picks will appreciate in value, making them an excellent way to accumulate long-term value and accelerate your rebuild.
Types of Trades
Another important aspect of rebuilding is understanding what types of trades you should be making. Many dynasty managers automatically assume that every rebuild should focus on acquiring next year’s rookie picks, but that is not always the best value available.
When you trade away productive veterans, you are often trading with contenders. If that team is expected to make the playoffs, the rookie pick you receive will likely fall somewhere in the 1.07 to 1.12 range. While there is certainly value in acquiring those picks, rebuilding managers should not overlook the potential value of future draft picks that are two years away.
The reason is simple: the further out a draft pick is, the more uncertainty it carries. While a contender may look like a powerhouse today, anything can happen over the next two seasons. Injuries, retirements, poor trades, or unexpected declines can quickly turn a strong roster into a rebuilding team. A future first-round pick two years away may ultimately become more valuable than a late first-round pick in the upcoming draft.
This is especially true during the season when managers have a better idea of where teams are likely to finish. If you know a contender is likely headed for a playoff run, it can be worth targeting future draft capital instead of settling for a pick that projects to be near the end of the first round.

Young players should also be a major target during a rebuild, but it is important to understand which players are worth acquiring. Dynasty managers often fall in love with youth alone, but not every young player is a good investment. If a player has failed to produce early in their career, the odds of them becoming a fantasy difference-maker begin to decline significantly. This is particularly true for running backs and qaurterbacks.
Positions to Target
When rebuilding a dynasty roster, I primarily focus on acquiring players at three of the four main fantasy positions: quarterback, wide receiver, and tight end. Running backs are usually the last piece of the puzzle because of their shorter career span and rapid value swings.
For quarterbacks, I am willing to take risks on young players because they have the longest production window in fantasy football. Look for quarterbacks who have shown flashes of talent, possess strong draft capital, or simply have not had a real opportunity to play yet. Not every young quarterback needs to be producing immediately to be a worthwhile investment. However, if a quarterback has been given opportunities and looks completely overwhelmed or ineffective, that is a different conversation. Rebuilding managers should focus on quarterbacks who still have a realistic path to becoming long-term starters.
Wide receivers should be the foundation of most rebuilds. Young, talented receivers offer some of the longest fantasy careers and can provide value throughout every stage of your rebuild. Even if they are not elite fantasy options, many can still serve as weekly starters, flex plays, or quality bye-week replacements. Building depth at wide receiver gives your roster stability while also creating assets that can appreciate in value over time.
Tight ends are another position worth investing in during a rebuild, especially in TE-premium formats. The position typically takes longer to develop than running back or wide receiver, which often creates buying opportunities on young players before they break out. By rostering multiple young tight ends, you increase your chances of finding a long-term starter while potentially creating a positional advantage over the rest of your league. Patience is often rewarded at tight end, making it an ideal position to target while your roster is still developing.

2026-2028 Focus
If you are currently rebuilding your dynasty roster, I thought it would be helpful to offer some advice on how to handle your team right now to put your roster in a better position for the future.
Draft Picks
If you are in a rebuild and don’t already have a collection of 2027 draft picks, you may be at a disadvantage right now. The hype surrounding the 2027 class has reached the point where many managers do not want to move their picks at all, while others are asking for a massive return to part with them.
The good news is that this should change once the season begins. As teams start competing and chasing championships, future picks tend to become more available. If you really want to acquire 2027 draft capital, patience may be your best strategy.
Many believe the 2027 class has the potential to be one of the deeper classes we have seen in recent years. Because of that, even picks in the 1.10-1.12 range could end up producing impactful fantasy players. Don’t overlook 2027 second-round picks either. While second-round selections historically have a lower hit rate, a deep class can push quality prospects into Round 2. Don’t let past trends stop you from collecting additional second-rounders if the value is right.
The 2028 class could be strong as well, even if it is not viewed as being as deep as 2027. There are already intriguing names that could headline the class, such as Malachi Toney or even Arch Manning if he decides to stay in school another season. Because of that, do not hesitate to target 2028 picks if acquiring 2027 selections becomes too expensive.
There may be an opportunity to take advantage of the market. While everyone is focused on acquiring 2027 picks, some rebuilding managers may be able to buy 2028 draft capital at a discount. A projected late 2027 first-round pick can quickly become an early or mid-2028 first if the contender you trade with sees their roster decline over the next year. Keep an eye on the long-term outlook of the teams you are trading with and use the hype around 2027 to create value elsewhere.
