Week 3 Quarterback Rankings & Start/Sit

Tier 1 | Elite QB1

Despite mediocre career MNF numbers (247 total yards, 1.7 TDs, and 1.3 INTs per game), Jalen Hurts has a favorable matchup against the Bears. Chicago runs man coverage at the 3rd highest rate in the league at 43.3%, while Hurts has the 2nd best QB rating against man coverage at 147.0. I think Hurts has a great chance to put up big numbers on MNF.

Tier 2 | Strong QB1

Tier 3 | Matchup-Driven QB1/High-End QB2 Options

Despite Joe Burrow going up against a Steelers defense that has allowed the fewest fantasy points per game to quarterbacks, give me Burrow and his history against Pittsburgh. He has thrown for at least 277 passing yards in 4 straight games against the Steelers, with 10 passing touchdowns combined during that stretch.

Justin Herbert being ranked this high should feel wrong based on his performance so far. Despite his average advanced stats, this ranking is strictly based on the potential for garbage-time opportunities. The Bills have allowed 600 passing yards and 6 passing touchdowns to quarterbacks through 2 games, giving Herbert plenty of upside if the Chargers are forced to throw.

C.J. Stroud has great sleeper potential in Week 3. The Colts rank bottom five in CPOE (Completion Percentage Over Expected) and 32nd in Adjusted Completion Percentage. Stroud leads the NFL in pass attempts, so facing a defense that allows opposing quarterbacks to complete passes at a high rate should give him a nice boost this week.

If you are forced to start Kirk Cousins in a Superflex league in Week 3, be cautious. Brock Bowers may be back, but the Saints run the 3rd most zone coverage in the league, and Cousins has struggled against zone with a 69.9 QB rating.

Deshaun Watson has some sneaky deep-league appeal this week against the Panthers, who have run the 4th most zone coverage in the league. Watson has been solid against zone coverage with a 112.3 QB rating, giving him some upside in this matchup.

Tier 1 | Elite RB Starts/Sits

Tier 2 | Near-Elite, Matchup-Proof-ish RB1

Week 3 is going to be a real test for James Cook as he faces the Chargers, who have allowed the fewest YBCO/ATT, meaning their defensive line is getting to running backs quickly. On the other hand, Cook is averaging 4.0 YBCO/ATT, showing how well his offensive line has created space for him. Hopefully, that continues this week, or Cook could end up having a touchdown-or-bust type of game if he is consistently getting hit behind the line of scrimmage.

Tier 3 | Borderline RB1s With Minor Concerns

Breece Hall could have his work cut out for him unless his passing-game usage remains strong. The Lions have allowed the fourth-fewest rushing yards and missed tackles forced per attempt, so Hall could struggle to find success on the ground once again.

De’Von Achane could struggle in Week 3 against a tough Chiefs defense that has allowed the second-fewest missed tackles forced per attempt. Achane has also struggled to force missed tackles this season, so Miami will need to get creative and find ways to get him into space where he can use his speed.

Jaylen Warren is going to need a big workload in the passing game to have a productive Week 3. The Bengals rank second in YBCO/Att allowed, which shows how quickly their defensive line has been getting to opposing running backs. Warren has also never scored in eight career games against Cincinnati, making his touchdown upside questionable. The hope is that Pittsburgh takes advantage of a Bengals defense that has allowed a league-high 15 receptions to running backs this season.

There is a lot of hope that Quinshon Judkins can get going this week against the Panthers, who have allowed the 2nd most YACO/ATT in the league. The Panthers have also allowed the 2nd most rushing yards to running backs this season, giving Judkins a great opportunity to have a strong Week 3.

Rachaad White could have some sleeper potential in Week 3. Seattle allows the fewest YPRR, meaning they have been elite at locking down pass catchers in the secondary. That could lead to more dump-off passes to White, especially with Tampa Bay likely playing from behind.

If you’re struggling at running back, Blake Corum could be a decent bet in Week 3. Denver has allowed the most missed tackles forced per attempt in the league, while Corum ranks seventh among running backs in that category. He could be good enough to get you 10 to 12 fantasy points this week.

Kaelon Black has some deep sleeper potential against the Cardinals, who allow the third-highest YBCO to opposing running backs. That suggests Arizona’s defensive line has struggled to stop runners before contact, giving Black opportunities to get into open space untouched.

Woody Marks is an interesting option in PPR leagues, as the Colts have allowed the second-most receiving yards to running backs this season. Marks handles the passing-down role in the Texans’ offense, giving him some sleeper appeal in this matchup.

Keep your eyes on Eli Heidenreich in Week 3 with Rico Dowdle out and Jaylen Warren questionable with a shoulder injury. Heidenreich could see an increased opportunity if Warren is also unable to suit up.

Week 3 Wide Receiver Rankings & Start/Sit

Tier 1 | Elite WR1s

Ja’Marr Chase has recorded 80 or more receiving yards in 5 of his last 7 games against the Steelers. He has also scored a touchdown in 5 of his last 8 games against Pittsburgh.

Tier 2 | High-End WR1 Anchors

Garrett Wilson should thrive in Detroit, as the Lions have allowed at least one opposing receiver to finish with 60 or more receiving yards in every game this season.

Tier 3 | Strong WR1/2 Options

Tee Higgins has recorded 50 or more receiving yards in six straight games against the Steelers. He has also scored a touchdown in four of his last five games against Pittsburgh.

Tier 4 | Reliable Volume WR2.

Jaylen Waddle should be able to see plenty of targets against a Rams defense that allows the third-highest slot target rate in the league. Waddle has played 57.1% of his snaps from the slot, and with his strong TPRR and YPRR, expect a volume-driven day for Waddle in Week 3.

Josh Downs should be in for a big day against the Texans, who allow the most YPRR in the league, meaning opposing receivers have consistently been productive against their coverage. Downs thrived in Week 2 once Alec Pierce went down, and with Pierce out for this game, Downs should see another boost in opportunities.

Adonai Mitchell is the ultimate boom-or-bust receiver in Week 3. The matchup is fantastic against the Lions, who have allowed the most receiving yards to wide receivers through two weeks. If you need upside in Week 3, Mitchell has plenty of it.

Dontayvion Wicks has a favorable matchup against the Bears, who allow the sixth-highest YPRR to opposing receivers. Wicks has also shown an ability to create separation, giving him some sleeper appeal in Week 3.

Xavier Worthy faces the Dolphins, who have allowed the fourth-highest TPRR and third-highest YPRR in the league. That should give Worthy plenty of opportunities to get open and see targets in Week 3.

Jalin Noel has some deep sleeper potential against the Colts, who allow the second-highest slot target rate in the league. Noel runs 71% of his routes from the slot, giving him a favorable matchup in Week 3.

Courtland Sutton has struggled to produce this season, and I wouldn’t expect Week 3 to be much different. The Rams allow the third-lowest YPRR to opposing receivers, while Sutton has struggled to create separation against opposing secondaries.

Tier 1 | Elite TE Weekly Differentiators

Trey McBride has produced 10 or more fantasy points in 3 straight games against the 49ers, scoring a touchdown in each matchup.

Tier 2 | Must Start Tight Ends

Despite never scoring against the Colts in three seasons, Dalton Schultz should be a solid fantasy option if Nico Collins is out. Schultz has also recorded at least 50 receiving yards in 3 straight games against Indianapolis.

Isaiah Likely will need his volume to come through in this game, as he currently has the second-highest target share on the team. The concern is the weather, as MetLife Stadium is expected to be hit by a nor’easter on Sunday with heavy rain that could limit the passing game.

Kenyon Sadiq has real sleeper appeal this week with Mason Taylor likely out for this matchup. The Lions have allowed 184 receiving yards and a league-high 4 touchdowns to tight ends this season, giving Sadiq a great opportunity in Week 3.

Pat Freiermuth has had plenty of success against the Bengals throughout his career, recording 68 or more receiving yards in 6 of his last 8 games against Cincinnati.

Colston Loveland has struggled to earn opportunities through the first two games, posting just a 6.3% target share and 0.07 targets per route run. He hasn’t done much with his routes either, as his 0.50 yards per route run ranks 76th among 80 qualifying tight ends.

Terrance Ferguson could see another bump this week with Puka Nacua likely to miss Week 3. Ferguson currently ranks 12th among tight ends in TPRR, showing that he is being targeted at a high rate when running routes.

Avoid Brenton Strange this week. He ranks outside the top 60 among tight ends in TPRR and faces a Patriots defense allowing the fourth-fewest fantasy points per game to the position.
