Week 8 Advance Player Stat of the Week | QB Rate vs Zone
Our advanced stat of the week is QB Rate vs Zone, a metric that measures how effective a quarterback is when facing zone coverage.
Why does it matter? Because most NFL defenses rely heavily on zone schemes, meaning this stat highlights which quarterbacks thrive against the coverage they’ll see most often.
From a fantasy perspective, a high QB Rate vs Zone suggests a passer is more consistent week-to-week—especially against teams that prioritize discipline and coverage disguise over man-to-man matchups. Quarterbacks who struggle vs zone can be matchup-dependent, while those who excel are often reliable fantasy starters regardless of opponent.

When we look at the top 12 fantasy quarterbacks on a per-game basis, the correlation becomes clear — most of them excel against zone coverage. In fact, 7 of the top 12 fantasy QBs also rank inside the top 12 in QB Rate vs Zone this season. Some of the best performers in this metric include Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott, and Patrick Mahomes — all of whom consistently carve up zone defenses.
Even more telling, nearly all of the top fantasy quarterbacks have a QB Rate vs Zone that ranks 17th or better, showing that elite fantasy production often goes hand-in-hand with strong efficiency versus zone coverage.

The one quarterback who stands out for the wrong reasons is Bo Nix, who holds just a 79.3 QB Rate vs Zone, the lowest among the current top 12 fantasy quarterbacks. For comparison, the next lowest among that group is Matthew Stafford at 94.0, which shows just how much Nix lags behind his peers in this area.
Despite those struggles, Nix continues to find ways to produce in fantasy, largely thanks to his rushing ability and efficiency on designed plays. His legs and red-zone usage help offset his inconsistency as a passer against zone coverage.
On the flip side, there are quarterbacks who excel vs zone and could be great trade targets heading into Week 8. Two names that stand out are Jared Goff (111.0) and Sam Darnold (106.6) Both rank inside the top five in QB Rate vs Zone. These are the types of passers who can sustain fantasy consistency even in tougher matchups, especially when facing defenses that rely heavily on zone schemes.

Justin Herbert: Be concerned with Herbert in Week 8. The Vikings pressure the quarterback, the 4th highest in the league, and Herbert struggles vs pressure, ranking 25th among quarterbacks.
Jordan Mason: If with the potential return of Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason is a good start. The Chargers allow the 3rd-highest Exp Run % (15+ runs), and Mason has a 4.8% rate, which ranks 21st in the league.
Tua Tagovailoa:Expect the Dolphins quarterback to continue to struggle against the Falcons’ zone defense. Tagovaolia has a 66.2 QB rate vs Zone coverage, and the Falcons allowed opposing quarterbacks a 77.3 QB rate.
Falcons Backfield: Expect both running backs to finish top 25 in week 8. Miami allows the highest Exp Run % and both backs rank inside the top 13 in runs of 15 or more yards.
Rico Dowdle: While the Panthers’ backfield seems split, I’d expect Dowdle to be still very productive. The Bills allow the 2nd-highest Exp Run %, and Dowdel ranks inside the top 20 in runs of 15 or more yards.
Keon Coleman: The Bills receiver has some sleeper appeal as the Panthers have allowed outside receivers to gain 100 yards in 3 of their last 4 outings.
49ers QBs: Whoever plays quarterback for the 49ers in Week 8 will likely struggle against the Texans’ zone coverage, which has allowed the lowest QB rate (56.6%) in zone coverage. Neither Brock Purdy nor Mac Jones has performed well against zone defenses.
Woody Marks: Could have some sleeper appeal this week as the 49ers have allowed the 5th most receptions and 3rd most receiving touchdowns to opposing running backs. Marks have proven to be a valuable weapon in the passing game when utilized effectively.
